From KOTOR to Judas: 10 Games That Are Taking Forever

We all love a good game reveal. Cinematic trailers, sweeping orchestras, slow-motion sword fights—pure serotonin. But behind the scenes, things don’t always go as planned. Some games get caught in production nightmares that derail their entire roadmap.

Here are 10 highly anticipated titles that are going through serious development trouble. Will they survive? Who knows. But here’s everything we know so far.

1. Judas – Ken Levine's Narrative Ambition Spiral

Ken Levine, the mastermind behind BioShock, launched Judas with sky-high expectations. But since its reveal in 2022, there’s been… silence. Originally slated for March 2025, we’re now past that, and still no updates.

Why the hold-up? Insiders blame Levine’s perfectionist, ever-changing direction style—something that also plagued BioShock Infinite. We know it’s ambitious, with branching narratives and dynamic storytelling, but without a solid release window, we’re in the dark.

Status: Stuck in narrative purgatory
Potential: Very high—if it ever comes out

2. Squadron 42 – 11 Years Later, Still Waiting

The single-player campaign of Star Citizen, Squadron 42 has been “feature complete” since late 2023, but is now delayed to 2026. The game features an all-star cast (Mark Hamill, Gary Oldman, Gillian Anderson), but despite millions raised and over a decade of development, there’s still no firm release.

At this point, fans are wondering if this is just another promise in a galaxy far, far away.

Status: Technically complete, perpetually delayed
Potential: Looks good, but at what cost?

3. Hytale – The Minecraft-Like That's Taking Forever

Hyped since 2018, Hytale looked like it could be the next big sandbox RPG. But nearly a decade in, there’s still no beta, no release date, and updates are vague at best. Developed by Hypixel and now under Riot Games, you’d think it’d have more momentum by now.

Fans are losing patience, and rightly so. Why is movement and combat still being worked on this far in?

Status: Glacial development speed
Potential: Diminishing by the year

4. Star Wars Eclipse – "Simmering" in Silence

Quantic Dream’s Star Wars project was announced in 2021 with a bang—but has fizzled into complete silence. With no updates and only the word “simmering” from the developers, fans are left wondering if this High Republic narrative title is actually progressing or just a vaporware mirage.

Status: Quietly cooking (maybe burning)
Potential: Intriguing concept, zero traction

5. Prince of Persia: Sands of Time Remake – From Classic to Chaos

Announced in 2020 with a planned 2021 release, this remake was trashed for its visuals and delayed. Then Ubisoft restarted development entirely, handing it to Ubisoft Montreal. It now has a tentative 2026 release—five years later than originally planned.

Status: Rebooted from scratch
Potential: Depends on how deep they go with the remake magic

6. Fable – Reborn on a Racing Engine?

The beloved Fable series is being rebooted by Playground Games—best known for Forza Horizon. It’s being built on the Forzatech engine (yep, a racing engine), and the developers have no RPG experience. Still, their reputation is solid, and delays may be the result of high standards.

Status: Cautiously optimistic
Potential: Could surprise us all

7. Vampire: The Masquerade – Bloodlines 2 – Gothic Soap Opera

Announced in 2019, Bloodlines 2 has seen developer changes, a fired narrative lead, near-cancellation, and total radio silence at times. Now under The Chinese Room (makers of Dear Esther), it’s aiming for an October release—but expectations are cautious.

Status: Reanimated corpse of a game
Potential: Could deliver… if the bite still has venom

8. Mind's Eye – Flashy, But Where's the Game?

Touted as the “next GTA meets Cyberpunk,” Mind’s Eye is Leslie Benzies’ new baby. The problem? Despite a flashy cinematic and a June release window, we’ve barely seen actual gameplay. Reports suggest bad AI, janky controls, and internal calls to delay.

Status: All style, questionable substance
Potential: Might need a miracle patch

9. Marathon – Bungie's PvP Project No One Asked For

A reboot of Bungie’s pre-Halo franchise, Marathon is being turned into a PvP-only extraction shooter—and fans are baffled. Allegations of art theft, internal creative confusion, and key staff departures all point to a messy dev cycle.

Status: Bungie seems uninterested. Fans, even less.
Potential: Mid at best unless turned around fast

10. KOTOR Remake – The Jedi Drama Continues

Originally announced in 2021, the Knights of the Old Republic remake has been tangled in corporate reshuffling, studio switches, and a full development restart. Saber Interactive is now in charge, but we haven’t seen anything concrete since.

Status: Full development restart
Potential: Could still be great—if it ever leaves hyperspace

Hope, Hype, and Hellfire

Some of these games may still deliver greatness (Judas, Fable, and Bloodlines 2 seem promising). Others are red flags wrapped in cinematic trailers. Game development is hard—especially when ambition runs wild—but transparency is harder to come by these days.

Fingers crossed. Controllers charged. We’ll be waiting.
