  • Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning isn’t the franchise’s best, but its intense tone and killer stunts make it a must-watch.
  • The slower first act and weak villain hold it back slightly, but Cruise’s performance and the direction shine.
  • A fitting (possibly final) chapter that honors the legacy of Ethan Hunt with grit, spectacle, and heart.

Is Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning a Worthy Finale? Full Breakdown

Alright, let’s get this out of the way—this might not be the best Mission: Impossible film, but it sure is one hell of a cinematic rollercoaster. As a fan who's been riding shotgun with Ethan Hunt since the ‘90s, watching The Final Reckoning unfold was kind of like watching the series graduate. It’s darker, heavier, and not afraid to put the popcorn aside for a moment and hit you with some serious dread.

Christopher McQuarrie is back in the director’s chair (thankfully), and you can feel his handprint on every slick setpiece and breathtaking stunt. Tom Cruise, once again, puts his actual life on the line for our entertainment. I mean, this dude hangs from a biplane doing acrobatics in the sky. If nothing else, go see this movie just to witness that madness.

The Setup: AI Gone Rogue, Again

The story picks up right after Dead Reckoning Part One. Ethan and his IMF crew are still tracking down the rogue AI known as The Entity—basically an omnipresent cyber-god that’s hijacked global intelligence networks and could reshape the world as we know it. Sounds familiar? Yeah, it’s not exactly reinventing the wheel in terms of "end-of-the-world" plots, but where it shines is in its tone. This movie takes that threat seriously.

There’s a weight hanging over the film, and it shows in everything—from the more somber musical cues to Ethan’s graver-than-usual demeanor. You really feel like the stakes are real this time, like humanity could genuinely face the apocalypse if Ethan doesn’t pull this off.

The First Hour: A Rough Climb

Here’s where things get bumpy. The movie’s first act is loaded with recap-style exposition and flashbacks—like it’s trying to catch up newcomers who missed the first seven films. I get it. Not everyone has been in this ride since 1996 like some of us, but man, it drags. For fans who live for this franchise, it’s like sitting through a summary of your own memories.

I found myself impatient, like, “C’mon, we know who Benji is. Let’s go!” But I had to remind myself—this is a blockbuster, a global one at that. For someone who hasn’t rewatched MI3 in a decade, those reminders are probably helpful. Still, it slows things down right when you want to see Tom Cruise defy death.

Action, Setpieces, and a Whole Lot of Adrenaline

Once that exposition dump ends? Buckle the heck up.

There’s a wicked truck chase through dimly lit caves, visceral hand-to-hand fight sequences, and one underwater suspense scene that gave me actual anxiety. Think back to the CIA break-in from the original movie, or the Burj Khalifa climb in Ghost Protocol—this one’s just as intense. You might find yourself physically clutching your seat without realizing it.

And the stunts. My god, the stunts. Cruise doing loop-de-loops on a biplane—while on the outside of it—might be one of the craziest things he’s ever done. And that’s saying something. The dude ran on the side of the tallest building on Earth, remember?

Characters and Nostalgia Done Right

What really caught me off guard were the callbacks. Not just surface-level “hey remember this guy?” moments, but actual story beats that recontextualize past events. Characters return and have real roles, not just cameos. For die-hard fans, this stuff hits deep.

And while the villain still feels a little too "muahaha" for my taste (honestly, nobody’s topping Philip Seymour Hoffman’s Owen Davian from MI3), the film makes up for it with its emotional core. Ethan feels more human here, more vulnerable. It’s a side of him we rarely see.

Tone Shift: Less Laughs, More Gravity

Unlike earlier entries, Final Reckoning dials back the humor and amps up the seriousness. You feel the despair. The hopelessness. It’s more The Dark Knight Rises than Fallout, and honestly, I didn’t expect that.

This isn’t a light watch. It demands attention. You might even walk out feeling a little emotionally drained. But that’s the point. If this truly is the final chapter (though let’s be real, it probably isn’t), it earns that gravitas.

Land of Geek Rating: 8.3/10

An emotionally heavy but technically brilliant finale that doesn’t quite reach the franchise’s peak, but still delivers a jaw-dropping experience worthy of the big screen.

Pros:

  • Insane Stunts: Cruise continues to raise the bar (and our heart rates) with death-defying action.
  • Tense Set Pieces: The underwater sequence and cave truck chase are edge-of-your-seat brilliant.
  • Smart Callbacks: Well-integrated nostalgia that enhances the franchise without cheap fan service.
  • Emotional Weight: Adds layers of vulnerability and seriousness rarely seen in action franchises.
  • Christopher McQuarrie’s Direction: Once again, tight and kinetic with a clear visual signature.

Cons:

  • Slow First Act: Heavy exposition and flashbacks stall momentum for longtime fans.
  • Weak Villain: The Entity’s human avatar lacks the menace of MI’s best antagonists.
  • Less Humor: A notably more somber tone that might throw off fans expecting the usual levity.
  • Reduced Team Dynamic: Ethan’s often alone, which mutes some of the series’ best ensemble moments.

Not the Best, But Still a Blast

At the end of the day, this is a Mission: Impossible movie. That means killer stunts, jaw-dropping action, and Tom Cruise going full beast mode. It’s not quite as tightly paced or perfectly constructed as Fallout, but it’s a solid, respectful send-off. If this is Ethan Hunt’s last mission, he goes out swinging—literally from the wings of a plane.

Go see it. Go see it big. IMAX, Dolby, whatever you've got near you. This one deserves the loudest, biggest screen you can find.
