  • DC’s cinematic universe is being rebooted under James Gunn and Peter Safran, now rebranded as the “DCU.”
  • The DCU kicks off with Creature Commandos and Superman in 2025, with an expansive slate of film and TV projects ahead.
  • This reset aims to fix DC’s fractured timeline and offer a bold, story-first approach that distinguishes it from Marvel.

The Complete Guide to the New DCU: Timeline, Films, Shows & More

For over a decade, the DC cinematic universe has felt like a multiverse-level mess—half-hearted crossovers, conflicting timelines, and more Batmen than you can shake a grappling hook at. But with the arrival of James Gunn and Peter Safran as the new co-CEOs of DC Studios, things are finally getting the much-needed reboot we’ve all been waiting for.

Welcome to the new DC Universe—aka the DCU. Let’s unpack where we’ve been, where we’re headed, and why this new chapter might actually stick.

How We Got Here: From DCEU to DCU

It all began in 2013 with Man of Steel. Zack Snyder’s darker, more grounded take on Superman divided fans but set the foundation for what was dubbed the DC Extended Universe (DCEU). It had a few hits (Wonder Woman, Aquaman), but its biggest swings—Batman v Superman and Justice League—landed with more confusion than celebration.

Between inconsistent tone, rushed crossovers, and muddled continuity (looking at you, Snyder Cut vs. theatrical cut debate), the DCEU struggled to find a cohesive voice. Add in the pandemic, Warner Bros.' wild streaming shifts, and creative leadership shuffles, and the universe slowly began to unravel.

Enter James Gunn: DC’s New Architect

After blowing up Marvel’s cosmic corner with Guardians of the Galaxy, James Gunn took on The Suicide Squad in 2021—one of the DCEU’s rare creative bright spots. That led to Peacemaker, a surprise streaming hit.

By 2022, DC had seen enough chaos. Warner Bros. Discovery appointed Gunn and longtime producer Peter Safran to take full creative control. Their mission? Rebuild the DC universe from the ground up, across film, TV, animation, and games—and actually make it all connected.

The old DCEU is being retired. The DCU is born.

Chapter One: Gods and Monsters

Gunn’s reboot doesn’t just hit the reset button—it launches an ambitious 8-10 year plan starting with Chapter One: Gods and Monsters.

Here’s what’s officially announced so far:

FILMS:

  • Superman (2025): The first theatrical release of the new DCU. Gunn writes and directs. A younger Superman balancing human values with godlike power.
  • The Brave and the Bold: A new Batman story featuring Bruce Wayne and his son Damian as Robin.
  • Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow: A spacefaring journey starring Kara Zor-El—Superman’s cousin, raised on a dying world.
  • Swamp Thing: A dark, horror-driven take on the classic character, with connections to the rest of the universe.
  • The Authority: A gritty team-up flick introducing morally complex heroes who aren’t afraid to get their hands dirty.
  • Clayface (in development): A character-driven, body horror spin on the infamous shape-shifter.

TV SERIES:

  • Creature Commandos: The first official DCU project, an animated series with characters like Weasel and Frankenstein.
  • Waller: A spinoff with Viola Davis returning as the no-nonsense Amanda Waller.
  • Lanterns: A grounded, HBO-style mystery featuring Hal Jordan and John Stewart.
  • Paradise Lost: A Game of Thrones-like prequel set on Themyscira before Wonder Woman's birth.
  • Booster Gold: A comedy-drama about a narcissistic loser from the future who wants to be a famous hero.

Gunn promises that actors will voice their animated characters and play them in live-action, keeping things consistent across formats.

Elseworlds and What's Staying

Not everything is rebooted. Projects that exist outside the DCU canon will continue under the “DC Elseworlds” banner:

  • The Batman sequel from Matt Reeves
  • Joker: Folie à Deux with Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga
  • The Harley Quinn animated series
  • Teen Titans Go!

A few familiar faces will carry over to the new universe—Viola Davis (Waller), Xolo Maridueña (Blue Beetle), and John Cena (Peacemaker), though Gunn calls it a “soft reboot” with “selective memory” from the DCEU.

Jason Momoa? He’s done as Aquaman—but may return as Lobo, the intergalactic bounty hunter. That’s a bold move.

Why It Might Actually Work

James Gunn is leaning into what makes DC unique:

  • Fictional cities like Gotham and Metropolis (vs. Marvel’s real-world NYC)
  • Emphasis on secret identities and duality
  • Actual consequences (yes, when a character dies, they stay dead—mostly)
  • A focus on genre diversity—horror, noir, epic fantasy, political thriller, and comedy
  • A “story-first” mentality that prioritizes heart and character over fan service

Also, Gunn isn't rushing it. He’s said the new universe will take its time, develop slowly, and let audiences grow with it. It’s a long-term plan—not a quick cash grab.

But Will Audiences Still Care?

That’s the million-dollar question.

Superhero fatigue is real. Even Marvel isn’t immune. Recent DC films like The Flash, Shazam 2, and Blue Beetle tanked hard—despite fan-favorite casts and solid reviews.

But there’s reason to hope. Gunn turned the Guardians from comic book nobodies into box office giants. If anyone can breathe new life into underdog DC characters, it’s him.

Still, 2025’s Superman will be the real test. If audiences don’t show up for this fresh start, it might spell trouble for the entire plan.

A New Hope for DC?

The DCU is DC’s best shot at building a cohesive, exciting universe that honors the legacy of its characters while carving a new path. It’s not a full erasure—it’s a reimagining.

For longtime fans? It’s a chance to finally get the universe we’ve always wanted.
For newcomers? It’s a clean slate—no homework required.

If Gunn sticks the landing, we may finally see DC rise from the cinematic ashes and claim its place alongside (or above) Marvel.

We’ll be here for every twist, turn, and team-up.
